“Australia is committed to ambitious and practical action on climate change. We are taking significant steps at home, in the region and globally,” said Ambassador of Australia to Nepal Ms. Felicity Volk adding, “We recognise it is vital that women are at the centre of discussion and debate in tackling one of the most pressing challenges facing the world.”

Ambassador Volk was speaking at the certificates handing over programme to eight women journalists who participated in the Australian Embassy funded ‘Women Climate Warriors – Media Training and Grants Program’.

The program was initiated to support emerging female journalists to develop documentary filmmaking skills and to draw attention to the plight of women across Nepal for whom climate change is having a significant impact on their lives and livelihoods.

Ambassador Volk congratulated the eight participants for their hard work and dedication over a six-month period.

She also awarded further grants to the three best documentary filmmakers for their short films – “The Price of Thirst,” “Lives Flows in the River,” and “Santoshi” to further develop these.

“These short documentaries, I hope, will bring much needed attention to the multiple ways that the most vulnerable, including women and girls, are disproportionately impacted by the consequences of climate change,” stressed the Australian envoy.

This initiative was delivered by the Human Rights Films Center through online and in-person training and mentoring, in the areas such as story development, cinematography, sound and documentary film production.

It also included support to the journalists to improve their technical knowledge of climate change.
