US to aid financial, medical supplies to Nepal

The United States has announced additional assistance of Nepali Rs. 320 million to Nepal to fight COVID-19.

The US Indo-Pacific Command has provided additional assistance to build an oxygen plant, purchase cylinders and build storage tanks to fight Covid-19, according to the US Embassy in Nepal.

The command has provided more than 5.8 million in assistance to Nepal since 2020 alone. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and various US agencies have so far provided more than 51 million in assistance to Nepal.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has called on the international community to help fight Kovid-19. Assistance is being received from China, USA and other countries.

In another report, the American lawmakers in a meeting of the Foreign Relations Committee under the United States Senate on Wednesday discussed the issue of Nepal which is currently reeling under the COVID-19 and American assistance to the country in its fight against the pandemic.

Executive Director of USAID Senate Taskforce formed to support COVID-19-hit countries Geremy Konyndyk said the US has allocated US $10 million (around NRs 1.2 billion).

Geremy informed that the assistance including the vaccines would be provided to Nepal under the COVID-19 Response Emergency Fund.

Meanwhile, the United States has urged Nepal to create an environment for two international flights in a week.

US Ambassador to Nepal Randy J. Berry made the request to Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinator of the COVID-19 Crisis Management Center Ishwar Pokharel on Thursday.

The government has suspended international flights till May 29 to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 infection, while two flights in a week are being operated with India under the air bubble facility.

The United States wants more flights because of the need to supply medical supplies beginning next week.
