Famous climber Angrita Sherpa has passed away.

Mountaineer Angrita Sherpa was also nicknamed as the Snow Leopard passed away at 10 am Monday at her daughter’s residence in Jorpati, informed former president of the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA), Ang Tshiring Sherpa.

Angrita suffered from liver and brain problems.

72-year-old Angrita was born in Thame of Solukhumbu district. Sherpa had set a record by climbing Mt. Everest 10 times without oxygen.

His funeral will be cremated according to the Buddhists religious tradition on Wednesday, said ex-president Sherpa.

He first climbed Choyu Mountain at the age of 20. Then he started climbing Mt. Everest in 1983 and had made last ascent at Mount Everest in 1996 without oxygen.

He had also put his feet at the top of Mount K2 in Pakistan and dozens of mountains in Nepal including Choyu, Manaslu, Lhotse, Annapurna and Dhaulagiri without oxygen.

Without him, no climber has been able to break the world record of climbing Mt. Everest ten times without oxygen.

Her daughter Doma said that Sherpa had not received much support from the Nepali government even though the Indian government had offered to allow him to stay in India. However, she added, the Nepal Mountaineering Association had been paying Nepali rupees 15,000 monthly.

Angrita has three sons and a daughter. The eldest son Karsang is still in the climbing profession. Second son Chhewang Dorje is living in the United States. The youngest son is in Khumbu. Angrita had been living with her daughter Doma at her house in Jorpati. Angrita’s wife died seven years ago.

Meanwhile, President Bidya Devi Bhandari, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and various other leaders and dignitaries have extended sorrow over the demise of world record-holder mountaineer Angrita Sherpa.

They wished for the eternal peace of the departed soul and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
