House elects Dev Raj Ghimire to Speaker

The House of Representatives (Lower House of Parliament) has elected today (Thursday) CPN-UML lawmaker Dev Raj Ghimire as its new Speaker.

Ghimire filed his candidacy yesterday (January 18) from ruling coalition’s common candidate.

Ghimire was elected to the Speaker of House with 167 votes defeating his rival Ms. Ishwari Neupane of Nepali Congress (NC) who secured 100 votes.

In the 275 members’ Parliament, one lawmaker stood in Absentee from voting while three members from Nepali Congress, one each member from Maoist Center and CPN-UML were absent.

According to the Constitutional system, Speaker (of RPP) did not involve in the voting pattern

Born in 2013 BS in Taplejung district of far East Nepal, Ghimire represents the House of Representatives (HoR) from Jhapa constituency No. 2.

A standing committee member of CPN UML and Province 1 in-charge of the party, Ghimire had also served as a member at the National Assembly (Upper House of Parliament) for six years beginning 2056 BS.

Meanwhile, as per the Parliament Secretariat’s program, the election of the Deputy Speaker of the HoR will be held on Saturday January 21.

According to the election program, candidates should file their nominations on Friday-Tomorrow (January 20).
