Saurya Airlines plane that crashed at the Tribhuvan International Airport on Wednesday morning claimed 18 lives.
The Canadian-made plane fell short of the runway and caught fire shortly after it took off from Kathmandu to Pokhara for a detailed inspection called ‘C-Check’ – a routine maintenance check.
C-Check is a comprehensive inspection of aircraft that is carried out every 18 to 24 months. It examines various structures, systems and parts of the aircraft that is likely to take one to four weeks to complete.
According to aviation industry experts, it is said that this inspection will be carried out to ensure that the aircraft is in perfect condition and that the necessary repairs and modifications have been carried out.
Officials of the Civil Aviation Authority said Saurya Airlines plane that was taking off in Kathmandu airport to fly to Pokhara skidded off the runway after taking off from runway 02 of Tribhuvan International Airport at 11:11 am.
The plane crashed a few seconds after the plane lost its balance while take off then veered to the right, hit the ground and fell into a ditch and burst into flames killing 18 of the 19 people on board.
The pilot, who is the sole survivor of this tragic accident Manish Ratna Shakya suffered injuries to his eyes and forehead is currently undergoing treatment at Kathmandu Medical College in Sinamangal.
Among the 19 people on board, including five management staff, technical staff, two crew members and one airline employee’s wife and their minor baby, all lost their lives.
Among the deceased one was a Yemeni national working as an engineer in the Airlines.
The Captain who luckily survived is the Chief-of-Operation of Shakya Airlines, Sagar Acharya is the head of aviation safety monitoring department, Dilip Verma is the head of the quality monitoring body. Mukesh Khanal is Head of Sales and Marketing Department.
Rescue workers were seen navigating through the wreckage, with large sections of the aircraft charred and blackened. Some photos also showed parts of the plane inside an air freight container.

According to the sources, the plane which was built in Montreal, Canada more than 21 years ago, was bought by Saurya Airlines in 2017 which was on schedule of regular testing under the technical inspection and maintenance program of the aircraft.
The TIA sources also revealed that Sourya Airlines requested a hangar for rent for about a month at Pokhara International Airport to conduct a technical check and was flying to Pokhara after getting permission from Pokhara International Airport.
Nepal Prime Minister KP Oli, Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation were among others who visited the accident site, discussed the cause of the accident with the authority’s top officials.

Meanwhile, various political leaders, parties have expressed grief over the tragic incident of an aircraft with call sign 9N AME CRJ 7 of Saurya Airlines at Tribhuvan International Airport on Wednesday morning.
Also the Government of Nepal has formed a five member investigation team.
As per the latest news PM Oli also visited the hospital to inquire about the latest condition of the injured pilot Shakya.
