The TIR system is going live in Qatar, boosting the country’s position as a strategic trading partner and driving more efficient transport routes in the Gulf region.

This announcement comes as an important step to enhance the position of the Qatar as a strategic trade partner and create more effective transport and commercial corridors in the Gulf Cooperation Council region and globally.

With Qatar, five out of six Gulf Cooperation Council member states are now implementing the international land transport system for transit.

With Qatar set to host a series of major international events in the coming years, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup, TIR will help speed up supply chains, ensuring the secure and timely delivery of goods to and from the state.

IRU is the world road transport organization working to drive the sustainable mobility of people and goods across the planet as the voice of more than 3.5 million companies operating mobility and logistics services in over 100 countries.

The only global transit system, TIR allows goods to be shipped from one country to another in sealed load compartments that are controlled by customs via a multilateral, mutually recognized and UN-backed system.

In addition to moving goods by road, TIR is proven to be an excellent trade facilitation tool for multimodal transports including roll-on roll-off, container shipments and rail.

With the activation of this system, transport operators, shipping companies and commercial beneficiaries will enjoy the advantages of this system represented in the availability of faster, less expensive and safer trade corridors between the State of Qatar and its trading partners in the region and the countries of the world.

In addition to the road transport of goods, the international transit road transport system has proved to be very effective as a tool to facilitate multi-modal transport including ro-ro ships, container freight, and rail transport.

This achievement comes in Qatar as a result of IRU working in close collaboration with Qatar’s Ministry of Transport and Communications, General Authority of Customs and IRU member the Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry, to implement the TIR system in the country.

Qatari Minister for Transport and Communications Jassim Saif Ahmed Al-Sulaiti

Meanwhile, Minister for Transport and Communications of Qatar Jassim Saif Ahmed Al-Sulaiti has said that “Deploying the TIR system in Qatar is a step forward for linking Qatar’s transport system regionally and globally with a view to increasing trade exchange and supporting economic exchange between countries and this will back our work on developing a sustainable land transportation in addition to cementing the relations between Qatar and UN organizations in the field of transport.

“The TIR system supports developing a multimodal transport sector and streamlines the transit of goods, in addition to other preferential features related to facilitating trade, reducing costs and time of freight to and from Qatar. All these are fundamental factors for achieving the Qatar National Vision 2030,” he added.

Congratulating Qatar for achieving this important trade milestone, IRU Secretary General Umberto de Pretto has said that IRU is proud to support Qatar in reaching its 2030 National Vision for sustainable trade as well as driving economic and social development.

“To help drive TIR successfully, IRU will continue working closely with the Qatari authorities and all TIR users to keep driving trade in the Middle East and beyond,” he stressed.
