These days many Nepalese citizens go abroad for study or work.
It was India primarily in the past but nowadays Nepalese can be found in every nook and corners of the world.
As of February-March 2025 statistics, the Nepal government has opened institutionally 111 countries for foreign employment. Nepalese citizens can work in 111 countries under institutional foreign employment schemes through licensed manpower companies. Additionally, they can seek individual work permits for 178 countries
The ratio of Nepalese youth moving from their usual place of residence to a new place either within a homeland or across an international border is increasing day by day.
Due to the limited employment opportunities within the country, international migration is considered as a livelihood strategy for many poor people. Most Nepalese migrants are involved in semi/unskilled labour, mainly on building sites, in factories and in domestic work.
Every year, Nepalese are propelled to migrate to foreign countries due to lack of employment opportunities in Nepal and the possibility of higher paying jobs abroad.
As per the government release data, on an average 1,700 Nepali people travel abroad for employment daily.
For a country, migration plays a pivotal role. Migrant workers send money they earn in their countries of destination in the form of remittances to their households.
While analyzing the data of those thousands of Nepalese going abroad for work, the ratio of blue collar jobs is over 95% and the rest are work in white collar jobs.
Nepali workers have also been secretly reaching various countries without knowing the government. So, there would be much higher numbers than the statistics released by the government who departed through official channels with registration.
According to the economic survey published by the Ministry of Finance for the fiscal year 2081/82, so far 1,670 manpower companies have been granted licenses to send workers for foreign employment.
According to the government’s revealed information, till mid-March of this year, over 7,500 Nepalese have gone to South Korea through the EPS system.
