Quakes hit Venezuela; help urged

A massive disaster has struck Latina American nation- Venezuela.

According to various international news reports, two powerful earthquakes wreaked havoc in Venezuela and around the capital Caracas, trapping people beneath the rubble of collapsed buildings killing at least 164 people, injuring nearly 1,000 and trapping many under the rubble.

It is believed that as Venezuelans were on a public holiday many Venezuelans were believed to be at home during the quakes.

A magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit about 160 km (100 miles) west of Caracas. The second quake of 7.5 magnitude was followed just after 39 seconds of main-shock, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

According to the report, the quakes in the northern coastal states were centered roughly 100 to 110 miles west of Caracas near Yumare that was the most powerful since October 29, 1900 according to the U.S. Geological Survey when a 7.7-magnitude quake struck offshore was struck by twin earthquakes of 7.2 magnitude and 7.5 magnitude on the evening at 18:04 local time (22:04 GMT) of Wednesday, June 24, 2026, 03:45:00 AM Thursday Nepal time.

Venezuela lies along the boundary between the Caribbean and South American tectonic plates, which are moving past one another.

Meanwhile, Venezuelan Acting President Ms. Delcy Rodriguez in an address to the nation late Wednesday declared a State of Emergency as many Venezuelans were killed and injured and warned that the toll was expected to rise as rescuers search collapsed buildings and emergency crews reach devastated areas.

President Rodriguez said the country was focused on rescue efforts, including the arrival in the coming hours of rescue crews from various countries including the US.

At this emergency period, she also urged cooperation from the world community.

In the meantime, leaders from various countries offered support and sympathy offers of help were made by various governments of the world including the USA.

The US “stands ready, willing, and able to help! I have instructed all agencies of our government to get ready to move quickly,” Trump wrote on social media.

Rescue teams from various countries had arrived in Venezuela on Thursday in the areas hit hardest by the pair of powerful earthquakes.
