COVID-19 claims over 1.54 million lives; US on top, Northern Mariana Islands least

The number of people dying from Covid-19 and the daily number of new cases has declined in the country, officials say.

They also say that quarantines and isolation facilities set up for Covid-19 patients, which once used to be fully occupied until a month ago, have all been deserted now.

The highest cases recorded is in the USA with Coronavirus Cases 15,159,529, Deaths 288,906 and Recovered 8,855,593.

The lowest is in Northern Mariana Islands with recorded cases are 109 and death tolls of only 2 lives.

However, with many regions still reporting surging numbers of new infections.

The tally by Johns Hopkins University shows that deaths in the US, Brazil and India make up nearly half that total.

Experts caution that the true figure is probably much higher.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres called it a “mind-numbing” figure and “an agonizing milestone”.

“Yet we must never lose sight of each and every individual life,” he said in a video message.

Meanwhile, efforts to develop an effective vaccine are continuing – although the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the death toll could hit two million before one is widely available.

The US has the world’s highest death toll with about 205,000 fatalities followed by Brazil on 141,700 and India with 95,500 deaths.

Although for most people COVID-19 causes only mild illness, it can make some people very ill. More rarely, the disease can be fatal. Older people, and those with pre- existing medical conditions (such as high blood pressure, heart problems or diabetes) appear to be more vulnerable.

For the cases of Nepal, the coronavirus cases reached 240,981. Of which the 1,594 people lost their lives whereas 225,805 were recovered.

301 Nepalis Died Abroad

But while counting the death toll of Nepalis living abroad tops 301 in 49 countries.

The number of Nepalis succumbing to Coronavirus infection in several countries across the world has surpassed 300 as of last Saturday, according to the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA)’s Health Committee.

With two more Nepalis, one each in Germany and India who died from the flu-like infection this week, the worldwide death toll of Nepali people has reached 301.

Germany reported the first death of a Nepali person from the virus there, said NRNA’s COVID-19 High Level Committee coordinator Chiran Sharma. According to the Health Committee‘s coordinator Dr. Sanjeev Sapkota, more Nepalis have been reported to have contracted the deadly infection this week in Japan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Portugal and India.

Till Saturday evening, the total COVID-19 cases among the Nepalis in 49 countries had reached 48,639 while 44,671 infected ones have been recovered. The recovery rate is 91 per cent.

After the permission the Pfizer and BoiNTech vaccines are to be given to the people around the world.

In the United States, it will start from December 11 while Britain has also said it will vaccinate its citizens sooner. Russia said it will vaccinate over 7 million people soon.

60% Died Were Above 60

Of the 1,567 people who have died due to Covid-19 so far 950 (around 60 per cent) were above 60 years old. According to the Health Ministry, 27.5 per cent of the people who died of the infection fall in the 40 to 60 age group.

“A lot of people might be dying from the infection at home, as people have stopped seeking tests and treatment, unless they become seriously ill,” added Thapa.

Public health experts have been warning for a long time that the death rates will go up once the infection spreads into the community and people above 60 and those with underlying conditions get infected.

New Drug

Meanwhile, scientists have discovered the most powerful drug for coronavirus. They claim that the drug can cure the infection in just 24 hours.

In addition to developing vaccines to end the corona epidemic, scientists around the world are exploring other alternatives.

Scientists claim that this drug will be able to completely eliminate the corona. According to him, the use of this drug not only prevents infection in corona patients but also has the potential to prevent serious diseases in the future.

According to reports, this drug – “MK-4482 / EIDD-2801”, is also known as Molnupiravir.

According to media reports, preliminary research has found that the drug is effective in eradicating the deadly flu, such as influenza.

They say that if the drug is used in infected patients, the infection will be removed from the patient’s body in just 24 hours.
