The Government of Venezuela has decided to exit from the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Venezuelan Foreign Minister Felix Plasencia confirmed in a social media post on Friday that “Venezuela had informed the United Nations.”
The decision to withdraw from the ICC on the orders of interim President Ms. Delcy Rodriguez citing what it calls the ICC’s “bias” against countries in the Global South.
“Venezuela considers that the Court’s actions reflect a demonstrated geographical bias, which has disproportionately concentrated its work on African and Latin American countries, to the detriment of the Global South,” Plasencia further writes.
The current government under the interim President Ms. Delcy Rodriguez has sought to align her government more closely with the United States.
The United States welcomes the decision by interim President Delcy Rodriguez and Venezuela to withdraw from the ICC and the new Venezuelan government’s partnership on American-led efforts to dismantle the corrupt and worthless ICC.
The United States also calls on other members of the ICC to withdraw from the Rome Statute, the US State Department said.
Meanwhile, ex-president of Venezuela Maduro and his wife are now facing justice in a U.S. court for crimes they have committed, according to the US said.
The ICC’s 18 judges are elected by the Assembly of States Parties for their qualifications, impartiality and integrity, and serve 9-year, non-renewable terms.
