The Caribbean island nation in the Lesser Antilles of the West Indies in the Caribbean region of North America– Barbados wants to become a republican nation removing Britain’s Queen Elizabeth as its head of state.
A former British colony that gained independence on November 30, 1966 is now thinking of Barbadian head of state.
“Barbados will take bold step toward full sovereignty and become a republic by the time we celebrate our 55th anniversary of independence in November 2021,” said, as per Barbadian journalist, Barbados Governor General Sandra Mason
Earlier too, the “republic” idea was put forward by previous governments over the past decades where the population is 286,641 as reported by the World Bank in 2018.
The wealthiest country in the Caribbean, Barbados is also a tax haven for many, even earning the moniker. It is also called “the Switzerland of the Caribbean.”
