Sushila Karki becomes PM of Nepal

Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was appointed the Prime minister of Nepal on Friday. With the strength of the Gen-Z movement, she was entrusted with the higher post responsibility to run the country.

President of Nepal Ramchandra Poudel administered the oath of office to the newly appointed PM Ms. Karki amidst a small function organized at the President office Sheetal Niwas on Friday night where members of the diplomatic corps in Kathmandu were few officials present.

The country was in vacuum of executive power after the two-day Gen-Z protests that has so far claimed over four dozen of youngsters’ lives with thousands of people injured and turned into ashes of the various government buildings including national secretariate Singh Durbar, Supreme Court prime minister’s residence, ministers’ quarter and other uncountable private properties of individual as well as business houses.

A 73-year-old PM Karki known for her fearlessness was retired from the post of Chief Justice eight years ago. After becoming the first female prime minister the first female Chief Justice of Nepal has created another history.

The new prime minister’s main responsibility is to hold the new parliamentary election set for (21 Falgun 2082) March 5, 2026 and run the administration promptly and effectively.

Meanwhile, President Ram Chandra Poudel dissolved the House of Representative with the recommendation of the Prime Minister Karki’s decision taken immediately after taking oath of office.

According to a statement issued by the Office of the President on Friday midnight, it reads “Right Honorable President Ram Chandra Poudel has dissolved the current House of Representatives, effective from 11 pm on Friday, Bhadra 27, 082 BS, as recommended by Prime Minister Sushila Karki.”

An MA degree holder in Political Science from Banaras Hindu University Karki was born on 25 Jestha 2008 in Morang district.

At the time of no female lawyers in Biratnagar, she started practicing law in 2035. After 27 years of practicing law, she became a senior advocate and became a temporary judge of the Supreme Court in 2065. She was appointed a judge in 2067. She became the acting Chief Justice on 1 Baisakh 2073 and after three months, became Chief Justice and led the Supreme Court for 15 months.

Popular among one of the leaders of civil society Karki had also played an active role in the democratic and democratic movements of Nepal.

Karki’s husband Durga Subedi was Nepali Congress Party’s activist but now a silent citizen.

Meanwhile, various countries have congratulated PM Karki on being appointed PM of Nepal.
