EU meets on Gaza-Israel War issue, UN rejects Russian proposal

Keeping in mind, the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas is likely to fuel inter-communal tensions in Europe and bring more refugees in search of sanctuary, the leaders of the European Union are holding an emergency summit Tuesday.

The meeting will concentrate on getting aid to civilians. Also, the leaders will be engaged in talking to stop tensions from spreading the war affect in the Europe region.

However, the 27-nation bloc European countries have ramped up security.

“The conflict could have major security consequences for our societies,” said EU Council President Charles Michel.

According to the report, over 4,000 people have been killed in Israel and Gaza since Hamas launched its bloody rampage and nearly 199 people are being held hostage by Hamas and other Palestinian militants in Gaza that includes Israelis, American, Nepali, Thai and other citizens including children.

As per the international media reports, so far over 1,400 Israelis and 2,600 Palestinians have been killed in the war and around 10,000 people wounded on both sides. The number is expected to rise

More than a million people have fled their homes in Gaza ahead of an expected Israeli ground invasion aimed at destroying Hamas.

Both the EU and the United States consider Hamas to be a terrorist organization.

Earlier for the summit, President Charles Michel of the European Council and President Ursula von der Leyen of the European Commission met US President Joe Biden in Washington.

Besides, ongoing Israel-Gaza war, the powerful leaders also talked Ukraine issue and reviewed joint activities to strengthen economic resilience between the United States and the European Union in an efforts to accelerate the global clean energy economy based on secure, resilient supply chains, and will continue cooperation in critical and emerging technologies, including on digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence.

Meanwhile, the UN Security Council on Monday evening failed to adopt a resolution calling for a humanitarian ceasefire, release of all hostages, aid access, and safe evacuation of civilians proposed by Russia.

Gaza and Israeli lands have been ravaged by almost 10 days of fighting between Israel and Hamas militants.

According to the UN Report, The Russian-led draft resolution received five votes in favour (China, Gabon, Mozambique, Russia, and the United Arab Emirates) and four against (France, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States), with six abstentions (Albania, Brazil, Ecuador, Ghana, Malta, and Switzerland).

For the Council to adopt a resolution, the proposal must receive at least nine votes in favour, with none of its five permanent members opposing or casting a veto.
