The World Bank, in cooperation with the Government of Uzbekistan, will organize a global meeting of the International Development Association (IDA) in Tashkent at the end of 2026.
IDA, which is part of the World Bank, provides financial support to 78 developing countries around the world.
In this regard, on June 15 of this year, a high-level roundtable discussion and media briefing were held at the Ministry of Economy and Finance of the Republic of Uzbekistan on the topic “The Role of the International Development Association in Reducing Global Poverty and Its Cooperation with the Government of Uzbekistan.”
The event was co-chaired by Jamshid Kuchkarov, Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan — Minister of Economy and Finance, and Akihiko Nishio, World Bank Vice President for Development Finance, said the IDA newsletter.
According to the PR and Communications Department of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Uzbekistan, during the event, representatives of the Ministry and the World Bank announced that a global meeting of the International Development Association will be held in Tashkent this December. Uzbekistan will become the first country in Central Asia to host this high-level event.
Established in 1960, the International Development Association is the World Bank’s fund for countries with lower income levels. The International Development Association supports development across a wide range of areas, including expanding access to education, healthcare and drinking water services, attracting investment in agriculture, improving urban and rural infrastructure, creating jobs, and promoting entrepreneurship.
The Association’s financial resources are replenished every three years. IDA financing is expected to support nearly 1.9 billion people in 78 countries in achieving various socio-economic development goals.
Today, the International Development Association has become Uzbekistan’s largest international development partner. In particular, Uzbekistan is among IDA’s 10 largest client countries globally, second in the Europe and Central Asia region in terms of the volume of IDA financing attracted.
As Uzbekistan’s has carried out broad socio-economic reforms as well as high level and steady development of bilateral cooperation between the World Bank and Uzbekistan, the Tashkent was chosen to hold the IDA meeting.
As expected, during the upcoming international event, senior representatives of donor countries and countries using IDA financing, with the participation of World Bank leadership, will discuss the interim results of the implementation of the IDA21 program.
The meeting will also serve as an important platform for launching discussions on the next replenishment cycle of financial resources for 2028–2031- IDA22.
