Sweden does not plan to join NATO, said Swedish Prime Minister Ms. Magdalena Andersson.
Sweden is a Scandinavian nation flanked by Norway to the west and the Baltic Sea to the east is one of the largest countries in the European Union by land mass yet remains neutral deciding not to participate in the membership of NATO.
Sweden, despite its militaristic roots, has remained neutral in times of war for centuries. Instead, commitment to human rights, public service and sustainability have helped Sweden’s image brighter in international affairs.
Even being a member nation of the European Union (EU), Sweden’s stance to not join NATO is still ongoing following its own security policies.
Swedish PM Ms. Andersson also added that, “Russia does not pose a significant threat or engage in military operations near Sweden’s borders.”
Also another Nordic country Finland who is also a member nation of the EU, Finnish Prime Minister Ms. Sanna Marin has said that the discussion of her country’s NATO membership changed after Russia attacked Ukraine.
Sweden and Finland, along with EU representatives, attended an extraordinary NATO leaders’ summit, the other day.
Six EU member states, all who have declared their non-alignment with military alliances, are not NATO members: Austria, Cyprus, Finland, Ireland, Malta, and Sweden. Additionally, Switzerland, which is surrounded by the EU, has also maintained their neutrality by remaining a non-EU-member.
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, also called the North Atlantic Alliance between 28 European countries and 2 North American countries, was created on April 4, 1949 in the aftermath of World War II aiming to guarantee the freedom and security of its members through political and military means.
