The United States has supported the restoration and preservation of 28 projects across Nepal.

The Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) program administered by the U.S. Department of State has been actively helping to preserve Nepal’s rich cultural heritage since 2003 in Kathmandu, Patan, Mustang, Humla, and Lumbini.

The AFCP program in Nepal has supported the restoration of various significant cultural landmarks, including temples, monuments, and historical sites in locations like Kathmandu, Patan, Mustang, Humla, and Lumbini.

So far, numerous cultural heritage preservation projects have been completed or underway across the country.

restoration of the Lakshmi Narayan Temple in Kathmandu Durbar Square project, completed in partnership with the Kathmandu Valley Preservation Trust, involved the use of traditional building materials and techniques, and employed local craftspeople.

The AFCP program supported the restoration of Nag Bahal Hiti in Patan Durbar Square. Nag Bahal is the site where the Patan Samyak, a grand assembly of all the Dipankara Buddha images from Patan and its surrounding areas, takes place every five years.

The Nag Bahal Hiti restoration project started in 2006 and was completed in 2008 completed in partnership with the Patan Tourism Development Organization which employed 18 local workers and focused on repairing both the inlet and outlet channels.

The team also marked access points on documentation maps to support future maintenance and monitor construction activity that could threaten the water system. After being dry for 10 years, the Hiti is now functional again, providing a continuous water supply to 100 households in the area.

It is believed that these AFCP projects not only contribute to the preservation of Nepal’s rich cultural heritage but also strengthen the relationship between the United States and Nepal.

It also promotes sustainable tourism, economic growth, and cultural preservation and exchange, while enhancing diplomatic relations and creating opportunities for local and U.S. businesses in tourism, hospitality and education-benefiting communities in both nations.

In addition to cultural preservation, the U.S. Embassy in Nepal also engages in other initiatives, such as supporting women entrepreneurs through the Academy for Women Entrepreneurship (AWE) program and fostering economic partnerships through the introduction of American brands like Cinna

The United States, in partnership with Nepal, is working to create conditions where their nationals can stay, build, and invest in a safe and prosperous future in their home country.
