Qatar’s HIA named second best followed by Japan’s Haneda Airport

Singapore’s Changi Airport has been named the world’s best airport for the 12th time.

According to London-based research firm Skytrax, Changi Airport, who lost the coveted title in 2021 and 2022 amid the Covid-19 pandemic, was also named best in Asia, best in the world for leisure amenities, and best in the world for airport dining.

The 2023 World Airport Awards ceremony hosted at the Passenger Terminal Expo in Amsterdam, The Netherlands on Wednesday also awarded Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar as the 2nd best.

Hamad International Airport (HIA) has won the second-best airport in the world, along with winning titles for ‘World’s Best Airport Shopping’ and ‘Best Airport in the Middle East’ for the ninth time in a row at the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2023,

Japan’s Tokyo International Airport (Haneda) bags third place whereas Seoul, Korea’s Incheon International Airport declared fourth best.

France’s Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, Turkey’s Istanbul Airport, Germany’s Munich Airport, Switzerland’ s Zurich Airport declared five, sex, seventh and eight world’s best airports following Japan’s Narita International Airport and Spain’s Madrid-Barajas Airport s ninth and tenth best.

Meanwhile, Crowne Plaza Changi Airport bagged the world’s best airport hotel title for the eighth year.

The most prestigious accolades for the airport industry, the World Best Airport Awards started in 2000 are being awarded based on a global survey conducted by Skytrax across over 550 airports.

The year’s survey was based between August 2022 and February 2023, it said.

Earlier, one of the transportation hubs in Asia, Changi Airport began operation in 1981 and held the top spot for eight consecutive years from 2013 to 2020.

But in 2021 Hamad International Airport bagged the World’s Best Airport Award while in 2022 Haneda Airport named the World’s Best Airport.

Before the start of the pandemic, Changi Airport was the world’s seventh busiest airport in terms of international passenger traffic, managing a record 68.3 million passenger movements in 2019.

Since its opening in 2014, HIA has rapidly become one of the most prominent airports in the world that witnessed a significant increase in passenger traffic, with a 101.9% Year-on-Year surge in 2022 making it a memorable year as the airport welcomed over 35mn passengers concluding a hugely successful year as the Official Airport Partner of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

Currently, HIA is constructing two new concourses within the existing terminal with plans of increasing its capacity to over 70 million passengers.
