Alpinist Sheikh Asma Al-Thani eyeing Explorer Grand Slam

Aiming to be Qatar’s first woman in adventurous field

In honor of Qatar mountaineer Sheikha Asma Binto Al Thani, the Ambassador of Qatar to Nepal Yousuf Bin Mohammed Ahmed Al Hail hosted a dinner at the latter’s residence on Tuesday evening.

The Qatari royal member Sheikha Asma Al-Thani is a mountaineer and member of the Qatar Olympic Committee was in the capital after achieving her dream of putting her feet at the top of 6,812 meters snow covered peak Mt. Amadablam recently.

Ambassadors of the various countries and dignitaries from various sectors of Nepal including media persons were present at the friendly dinner.

After reaching the summit of Mount Ama Dablam in Nepal, princess Sheikha Asma, the first woman mountaineer of Qatar, shared a photo of the climb on her official Instagram page to celebrate her feat.

“Arrived! We submitted the beautiful Amadablam ’Mothers Necklace’ at 10 am yesterday, November 8th,” she announced the milestone in an Instagram post.

In response to her latest mission, the Qatar Olympic Committee also congratulated Sheikha Asma in a post on Twitter on Tuesday.

Sharing her do or die experiences while conquering the Mt. Amadablam, she expressed “had not there been an experienced Sherpas and of course team members’ inspiration for her venture to the Mt. Amadablam would not succeed.”

“Though it was extremely harsh weather conditions, I along with team members atop summit goal after a 32-hour non-stop climbing,” the Qatari Mountaineer Sheikha Asma informed, who has a dream of reaching the skies in 2003 when she was just 14, writing “climbing mountains” on her wish list.

“As I know the hardship to be experienced in the mountains I will yet keep my dreams of climbing mountains to fulfill my childhood mission,” said mountaineer and sports personality Sheikha Asma. “The experience was tough. Despite the challenges and long journeys, although it was highly technical at extreme altitudes, we still climbed higher,” she added.

The Qatari adventurous woman Sheikha Asma Al-Thani is on mission to complete the Explorers Grand Slam of summiting each continent’s highest peaks and reaching the poles and to become the first woman from the Middle East to complete the Explorers Grand Slam – that are to climb all the highest Seven Summits in all continents and reach to North and south Poles.

The 31-year-old strong-heart Arab woman began her mountain climbing journey in 2014 by putting her feet on Africa’s 5,895 metres highest snow peak Mt. Kilimanjaro.

On the course of the Explorers Grand Slam, she was so far successful to reach the top of the highest mountain in South America-the 6,969 meters high Mt. Aconcagua in Argentina and reached the North Pole in 2018.

After successfully reaching the highest peak in Europe, Mount Elbrus at 5,642 high in Russia in August of this year, Sheikha Asma added one more peak on her mission list to be completed.

As per information shared, she has climbed four mountains Mt. Elbrus, Mt. Dhaulagiri, Mt. Manaslu and more recently Mt. Ama Dablam in less than five months.  

Only a few weeks ago, Sheikha Asma climbed Mt. Dhaulagiri, a mountain range in Nepal known as the 7th highest mountain in the world at an altitude of 8,167m.

She sets out on conquering each peak to achieve the Explorers Grand Slam, Sheikh Asma hopes her feats will inspire other adventurous females to follow her footsteps.

Of course, while talking to this scribe, the Qatari Royal Sheikha Asma has also dreamt of becoming the first Qatari woman to put her feet at the world’s highest snow peak of 8,848.86 metres Mt. Everest sooner.

Sheikha Asma Al-Thani is a woman with many achievements. She is an adventurer and very involved with sports in Qatar. A Director of Marketing and Communications at Qatar Olympic Committee by profession a Qatari royal Sheikha Asma believes limits are just a state of mind.

An alpinist and sports personality Ms. Sheikha Asma believes that challenges provide inspiration which in turn leads to achieving goals. “I want women empowerment in Qatar (if possible in Arab states) by teaching and inspiring a new generation of women across the region to dream bigger,” reacted Qatari alpinist woman Sheikh Asma this scribe at the dinner event.

Qatari Royal Sheikha Asma left the envoy’s residence saying, “the aim of my expedition was to build a better relationship and understand each other’s cultures by coming together to achieve a common goal.”

She left Nepal on Wednesday (December 1) morning to her another venture abroad.
