After nearly two years of gap, Saudi Arabia has lifted all restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic on foreign travelers, including mandatory vaccinations that allows for prayer and Umrah.

In a major relief to Muslims across the world, Saudi Arabia has decided to allow foreign pilgrims to perform Umrah lesser pilgrimage to Makkah, during the month of Ramadan this year that starts from April 2, 2022 until May 2, 2022.

“The Two Holy Mosques will remain open to foreign visitors, pilgrims during the month of #Ramadan 1443”, official handle of the news publication Haramain Sharifain, said in a single line message posted on Twitter.

Saudi Deputy Minister of Hajj and Umrah Saudi Dr. Abdulfattah Mashat said, Saudi Arabia will not limit the number of upcoming traveler pilgrims during the holy month which is expected to 400,000 perform Umrah during the fasting month of Ramadan.

The Saudi Kingdom will accept anyone who obtains permission to perform Umrah until now. Umrah means ‘a visit’ to the Holy Kaaba (the Sacred House of God) in Arabic and can be performed by anyone, anytime of the year; unlike Hajj, which is an obligatory pilgrimage to Makkah, performed every year within the first 10 days of the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah.

Umrah is the name given to a pilgrimage to Mecca, a shorter version of the annual Hajj gathering. Umrah offers an opportunity for Muslims to refresh their faith, seek forgiveness and pray for their needs. One who performs it is said to be cleansed of their sins.

Umrah may essentially be performed any time during the year, although it is considered ideal to perform it during the holy month of Ramadan. In normal circumstances, any Muslim would be allowed to perform Umrah during the month of Ramadan.

Generally, January through April are the best season for Umrah performance from weather angle and crowds.

It is to be noted that men should get their heads shaved, while women should get their hair cut short to the length of fingertips.
