The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) appealed on Wednesday for US $21.4 million to prevent 9.9 million refugees’ health services from being impacted by mpox known as monkeypox in 35 countries.
Mpox is a viral disease that can be transmitted through physical contact with an infected person, animal or contaminated objects.
This year, over 20,000 suspected cases have been reported in Africa – a home to over a third of the world’s forcibly displaced people.
UNHCR warned that mpox threatens to further strain already overstretched humanitarian resources, potentially disrupting critical services and aid such as food distribution, education and protection activities.
