Golden History: Nepal advance to Cricket World Cup qualifiers

President Ramchandra Poudel has honored the players and coaches of the cricket national team by garlanding them at the program held Friday at President House Sheetal Niwas.

On the occasion President said that the achievements of the Nepali cricket team with limited resources and infrastructure are important and the contribution made by the players for the nation is worthy of pride.

State should invest in building adequate infrastructure for the development of cricket games in a professionalism, he stressed.

Poudel also wished the team that is going to play the ODI World Cup Qualifier.

Earlier on Thursday, President has expressed his happiness over the Nepalese team qualifying for the World Cup by defeating the UAE in the final match of the triangular series under the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League-2.

Praising the Nepali team after Nepal defeated UAE, he congratulated and thanked the Nepalese team saying Nepal will be able to play the qualifiers for the One Day Cricket World Cup.

Also, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has congratulated the cricket team for qualifying for the World Cup.

The Nepali cricket team defeated the UAE by 9 runs according to the DL (Duckworth Lewis) rule and managed to reach the World Cup qualifiers.

“I am very happy that Nepal has succeeded in qualifying for the World Cup after defeating the UAE in the ICC Cricket World Cup League-2,” Prime Minister Dahal said adding “high hope for being successful in keeping the self-esteem and pride of Nepal displaying high skills in the league matches.”

On Thursday, Nepal won against UAE in the match held at TU cricket ground in Kathmandu and Nepal has achieved a historic victory. Along with this, Nepal has entered the qualifying stage of the World Cup. Thursday’s match was the biggest and most important in Nepali cricket history. After winning today’s match, Nepal overtook Namibia with 39 points by scoring 40 points

By winning today’s match, Nepal has placed in the top three of the League-2 table

 According to the Duckworth and Lewis method, Nepal became the third team to directly qualify for the ODI World Cup in India by winning by nine runs from League-2. Nepal won by 9 runs as per DL (Duckworth Lewis) rule due to bad light.

Nepal’s Victory

With today’s victory, Nepal has qualified for the World Cup. Thursday’s match is the most important match in Nepali cricket history. Along with this, Nepal has won 11 consecutive matches out of 12 matches played. After winning today’s match, Nepal overtook Namibia with 39 points to qualify for the One Day World Cup in Zimbabwe.

Four players scored impressive fifties in today’s match. Kushal Bhurtel, Bhim Sarki, Arif Sekh and Gulshan Jha’s impressive half-centuries proved helpful for Nepal’s victory. It is because of their contribution that Nepal managed to reach the World Cup qualifiers.

In today’s match, UAE, who won the toss and batted first, lost 6 wickets in the scheduled 50 overs and gave a target of 311 runs.

In today’s match, Vritya Aravind scored 94 runs and opener Mohammad Wasim scored 63 runs for UAE.

Dipendra Singh Airi took 2 wickets for Nepal. He spent 19 runs keeping 2 maidens in 8 overs. Sompal Kami took 1 wicket and made 74 runs in 9 overs. Sandeep Lamichhane bowled 10 overs and took 1 wicket for 80 runs. Lalit Rajwanshi took 1 wicket after making 27 runs in 10 overs. Gulsan Jha spent 63 runs in 8 overs. Kushal Malla gave 38 runs in 4 overs while Arif Sheikh gave 6 runs in 1 over.

By placing in the top 3 of League Two, Nepal secured Zimbabwe’s ticket for the global selection. Chasing a winning target of 311 runs, Nepal lost 6 wickets in 44 overs and scored 269 runs. Then Nepal won by 9 runs based on DL method.

After the victory, when the players reached the audience, they congratulated the players by saying ‘Nepal Nepal’. They exchanged greetings saying ‘Thank you Team Nepal’.

Meanwhile, Bagmati Province government has announced to award Nepali cricket team for historic achievement performed outstandingly in the ICC World Cup League-2 being qualified for the 2023 One-day Men’s World Cup qualifiers.

According to the report, the province government has announced to award the winning cricket players with a cash prize of Rs 100,000 each for their encouragement.
