2nd IATA World Sustainability Symposium in Miami

The International Air Transport Association (IATA)’s second World Sustainability Symposium (WSS) is to be organized in Miami, USA on 24-25 September 2024.

The event to be hosted by American Airlines will focus on actions needed to achieve the airline industry’s commitment to net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050.

According to the IATA press release, the key elements to help achieve net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050 being addressed at the WSS include: Decarbonization, Innovation and Technology, Policy and Regulation, Finance and Transparency.

It is the second time that IATA is organizing the WSS, and will be spoken by various dignitaries.

Over 500 professionals from aviation, sustainability, technology, agriculture, trade, development, and finance as well as policy makers and other stakeholders are expected to attend.

Air Cargo Demand Up

Meanwhile, IATA released data for July 2024 global air cargo markets showing continuing strong annual growth in demand.

As per the statement, the total demand rose by 13.6% compared to July 2023 levels (14.3% for international operations). This is the eighth consecutive month of double-digit year-on-year growth, with overall levels reaching heights not seen since the record peaks of 2021.

Capacity also increased by 8.3% compared to July 2023 (10.1% for international operations).

Asia-Pacific airlines saw 17.6% growth for air cargo in July while the Europe-Asia, Middle East-Asia, and Asia-Africa trade lanes rose by 17.9%, 15.9% and 15.4% respectively.

North American carriers saw 8.7% growth for air cargo in July and Latin American carriers saw 11.1% demand growth.

European carriers saw 13.7% growth. Likewise, Middle Eastern carriers saw 14.7% demand growth whereas African airlines saw 6.2% demand growth for air cargo in July.
